Spring is the perfect time to complete outdoor home renovation projects. And when it comes to outdoor and landscaping products, concrete is the ideal material. Concrete and landscaping go perfectly together, so if you’re thinking about using concrete in landscaping, you’re on the right track. In case you need some help coming up with ideas, here is one of our favorite DIY concrete projects to get you started.
How to Make a DIY Concrete Fire Pit
The fire pit is the classic DIY concrete landscaping project. They are easy to create and can make your backyard not only look fantastic but also become a popular gathering place for friends, family and neighbors.
To make a fire pit, you need to cast the bowl. You’ll require two very large bowls, one of which will go inside the other. These bowls will serve as your molds. Spray them with non-stick spray so that you will be able to get the concrete out of the mold.
Mix up the concrete, making sure you are wearing sufficient safety gear. Mix it until it’s sufficiently thick. Use a trowel, and add the mix to the outer mold. Then, place the inner mold in and keep it centered to give your pit an even thickness. Add weights to the inner bowl so that you can have an inner bowl as big as possible without making the walls too thin. Remember that you are going to need to place gel canisters under the lip of the bowl.
Let the concrete cure for about 48 hours, then remove it from the mold. Sand it down with a 60-80 grit sanding pad, wipe away the debris, then go over it with 220 grit sandpaper.
At this point, your fire pit should be ready to go. Take it out to where it will live, put gel fuel canisters inside it, lay a grate over the top and place a layer of rocks over that. Now you’re ready for outdoor evening fun!
